I am a visual artist working with paint and photography. My work attempts to recognise rural content as part of the contemporary world. In particular, I am interested in rural objects found in shed, yards and workshops. I find these objects have a distinct, grounded quality. I represent them through paint on plywood and paper surfaces. The small to medium scale of the work creates a concentrated intimacy between the objects and the paint. The physical expression of this paint sitting on a surface plays an equally important role in the work. I use the shape and direction of the brush to describe the objects - this action marries together the content and the material further. I like to think this creates paintings that are more than descriptions of rural objects, it renders the paintings themselves as distinct and specific objects forming a bridge between rural life and modernity. - pollymaher
